Doula T&C:

As your doula, I will accompany you (and your partner if applicable) as you prepare for your birth and then support you during labour, birth and in the immediate postnatal period. My role is to be led by you, providing the support that you need. The support I give is physical, emotional, practical and informational and will be offered unconditionally and without judgement. I draw on all my knowledge and experience to provide this support, bringing specialist skills in hypnobirthing, birth and postnatal doula support, use of birth biomechanics for pregnancy and birth, birth trauma recovery support and breastfeeding peer support*.
I do not give medical advice or perform any clinical procedures. I cannot and will not make decisions for you. I will be your advocate and encourage you to advocate for yourself. I am fully independent. I am working for you, not your caregiver or NHS trust. Our conversations and all correspondence are kept strictly confidential.
If the need arises, I can help you communicate with your care providers to ensure you have all the information you need to make informed decisions during pregnancy, labour and early parenting. I can provide evidence-based information as well as signpost you to unbiased information sources so you can balance the benefit of any choice you make against any potential risk. I can provide continuity of care for you and your partner, and everything I do is tailored to your needs whilst supporting you in having full autonomy over your birth choices.*
Tasks within my scope of practice are, but not limited to: supporting your antenatal preparation, making suggestions for labour progress, non-medical comfort measures (massage, counter pressure, position suggestions, breathing, visualisations, deep relaxation etc), providing nourishment and hydration for you and your birth team (as appropriate), taking pictures/video, documenting events and milestones etc. I can help safeguard your bonding period and am available for consultation after the baby is born. I do not come between you and your birth partner/s (if appropriate) but rather protect your space and support both of you.*
I prefer to meet with you and (if applicable) your partner once before the birth. The structure of this session is tailored to you but can include getting to know each other, exploring your priorities, worries, or concerns, building a birth plan based on your choices around all birth options, techniques to manage labour more comfortably, understanding what to expect and planning how we will work together.
I ask that you make me aware of any specific requirements or circumstances (cultural, religious or otherwise) in advance so I can support you in the most appropriate way.
I encourage you to get in touch with questions, concerns and updates and it is beneficial to catch up and see how things are for you. I will keep you informed if I am unavailable to chat and get back to you as soon as I can. Once you are 39 weeks pregnant, I will consider myself on call for you 24 hours a day and I will always have my mobile phone with me. If for some reason I do not answer your call, please leave a message and try the alternative numbers listed below. During the on-call period I ask that you keep me informed of any updates or changes you feel are happening that may indicate readiness for labour. If I haven’t heard from you for a while, I may contact you just to check in.
Please call me (not message) immediately (at any hour of the day or night!) when you believe that you may go into or are in labour. We, or myself and your partner, can chat and decide on the best plan from that point onwards.
We will discuss in advance when you may like me to come to when you are in labour. If you are planning to birth in a hospital or birth centre, then I would normally come to your home first, but this is totally up to you and may not be necessary depending on how quickly your labour is progressing.
The time it takes for me to get to you will be dependent on several factors including distance to your location, the need for me to make arrangements such as childcare and other circumstances out of my control. When we speak on the phone, I will give you an estimate of how long I will take to get to you but please assume a minimum of 60 minutes if you are local and 90 minutes or more if you are further away.
Except for circumstances that are planned in advance or that are out of my realm of influence, I will remain with you throughout labour, birth and bonding. For any transfer from home to hospital or within the hospital I will do my very best to stay with you according to your needs and wishes. My support extends to unforeseen emergency or elective Caesarean birth. This means I will stay with you, in theatre if possible, and continue to provide emotional and practical support during the birth and immediately postpartum. The hospital policy may be that a Doula/second birth partner cannot be present for certain procedures such as Caesarean birth. If this is a concern for you then please discuss this in advance as individual exceptions may be made. In circumstances where you are separated from your baby, I can remain with you or accompany the baby depending on what you prefer, and according to hospital policy.
I will make every effort to provide the services described above. It may be that external circumstances limit my availability (for example rapid labour). If failure to attend your birth is due to my misjudgement or unavailability, only the deposit is payable. You may make further payments according to your discretion or further services made. If failure to attend your birth is due to negligence on your part (e.g. you call me too late, or you choose to keep vital information from me) the full fee applies.
In the unlikely event of 2 clients going into labour at the same time, in the absence of a prearranged backup Doula, I will prioritise the first booked client and attend their birth. If I miss your birth due to attending the birth of another client, you will receive a refund of £300. If I am attending your birth and must leave before the baby is born, we will discuss the refund according to how long I have been with you.
If you and your partner (if appropriate) decide you no longer require my services and cancel this agreement less than 6 weeks before your due date, (34 weeks) the full fee applies. This is because I may already have gone on call for you and/or worked with you for some weeks/months.
